Plastic product security technologies and materials

Since 2005 the Research Institute has been engaged in developing the passport and visa documents of the new generation and in the program of their security increase.

Hinge material for fixing the polymer page to the passport book of the new generation (TU 47-08-29-2005) has been developed and protected with Patent No. 50466.

Laminate with a holographic image, also with transparent holograms for hot-press application for the domestic passport of the citizen of the Russian Federation (TU 47-08-32-2007), as well as hot stamping foil with transparent holograms for the informational page of the passport of the citizen of the Russian Federation containing an electronic data carrier have been developed and brought into production.

Blik element (patent RU 237408 and RU 2433048) has been developed and implemented. It is applied for the security of passports and plastic cards representing a printed image covered with metalized film to which a personalized image Blik is applied with a special raster. On the one hand, it represents the change of the image at various viewing angles (a drawing or an image of the photo), and on the other it is a personalized element carrying the information proving the holders identity. Works upon approbation and application of various holographic elements and covers containing various security effects, like motion, volume, colour change, in the shape of laminates, hot stamping foil and stickers to the plastic product are carried out.

The technology of manufacturing cards with the transparent window security element is being developed.

Security threads and polymer security bands are another example of application of polymer materials.

Security threads and bands are strips of film materials up to 20 mm wide embedded into the paper structure during its production.

Polyethylene terephthalate film with various security elements applied to it is used for the thread production.

Threads can be unitary, consisting of one layer of film, and doubled, consisting of two and more layers of film.

Threads may be covered with a layer of aluminium, contain microprinting, luminescent agents, diffraction gratings.

The thread construction is constantly improved and complexified.

Skate thread representing a polymer strip consisting of two polyethylene terephthalate films united with a glue layer, doubled and with two metal layers with demetalization, a varnish layer with an embossed diffraction grating, a layer of white ink and adhesive layers on both sides of the thread has been developed and put into production.

Holographic thread with the mobile kinetic effect is the next modification of security thread. These are wide threads with the maximal area to observe the visual effect.

If the thread is tilted at various angles, one can observe motion of the image elements on the thread in respect to one another.

The specialists of the Research Institute have developed a Standard of Goznak Printed Products. The rules of determining the durability determining a method of approaching the printed product durability determining, according to which the printed products developed at Goznak now are tested for the impact of various climate conditions and resistance to mechanical effects in accordance with the procedure offered in the standard.

The new security features and technologies of their production and embedding into paper developed at the Institute are protected with patents.

Plastic document testing laboratory

The Research Institute of Goznak today is the only organization in Russia possessing the necessary methods and carrying out tests of ID-1 and ID-3 documents durability. Within the framework of document testing the Research Institute has tested passport and visa documents of the new generation (travel passport), including those with the Russian microchips, as well as a whole number of documents on the plastic basis issued at the enterprises of Goznak.
